The social posting screen lets you write one message and publish it to several social accounts at once. You can adjust the text per network or per account, add images or video, get help from AI, and publish now or at one or more planned times.
Before you start
Select the right company and website in the top bar. See Choosing your company and website.
Connect the company's social accounts first. See Connecting social media accounts.
The Social Post card is not shown to users with the Reporter role on the website.
Opening the social posting screen
Click the Social Post card ("Create social media posts and personalise for each channel.") in Keep your clients posted on the AI App dashboard. The Create Post screen opens.
You also land here when you click Publish as social post in AI Chat or Add to Social in the AI Writer. The text is filled in for you and you see "Content received from external source. Review and post!"
The first time: moving to the new social media screen
If your company still uses the older social composer, you may see a banner: "A new social media experience is available." Clicking Switch to new app starts a one-time move of your social accounts and posts.
While the move runs, you see Migrating your social media with three steps (Social accounts, Posts & content, Finalizing). It usually takes 3 to 5 minutes, and you can close the page while it continues. If something goes wrong, you see Migration encountered an issue with a Retry migration button. If retrying doesn't help, contact the UP-TO-DATE support team.
Step 1: Select accounts
Under Select Accounts, click the accounts button. All active accounts are selected by default.
In the Select Accounts window, tick or untick accounts per network, or use Select All / Deselect All.
Click Done.
Supported networks are Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X (Twitter) and Google Business. If you see "No accounts connected", click Connect Accounts.
Step 2: Choose the post type
Under Post Type, choose Feed, Reel or Story.
Feed is a normal post and works on every network.
Reel needs a video (vertical 9:16, 3 to 90 seconds) and works on Facebook and Instagram.
Story needs 1 image or video (9:16 recommended) and works on Facebook and Instagram. Stories expire after 24 hours, and Instagram stories ignore the caption.
Accounts on networks that don't support the chosen type post it as a normal feed post instead.
Step 3: Write the message
Type your text in Your Message. The counter shows your text length against the smallest limit of the networks you selected.
Network | Character limit |
|---|---|
X (Twitter) | 280 |
63,206 | |
2,200 | |
3,000 | |
Google Business | 1,500 |
Important: If your text is longer than a network allows, it is cut off at that network's limit (ending in "...") when it is posted. You only get a warning, so shorten the text or customize it for that network.
Adjusting the text per network or per account
Click More options.
Switch on Customize per platform ("Different captions for each social network") or Customize per account ("Different messages for individual accounts").
Click a network (or account) tab. At first it uses your default message.
Click Copy default here to start from the default text, then edit it. Each tab has its own counter and a writing tip.
Click Use default or Reset to go back to the default message.
You can also edit the text directly in the Preview on the right, which shows how the post looks per network.
More options also has Use Template (start from a saved post template) and Insert Merge Tags.
Getting help from AI
Click Generate with AI in the toolbar to open the AI Assistant. Add Keywords and an Instruction (required), and under More options choose an action (Generate, Rewrite, Improve, Expand or Shorten), a Tone, a Language, and whether to add hashtags and emojis. Then choose from Pick a suggestion.
Click Suggest Hashtags to add hashtags based on your text.
Step 4: Add images or video
Click Add Media to open the media library. Choose existing files or click Upload Media. You can attach up to 4 items, or 1 video for a Reel.
Click the AI Image tile to open Generate Image. Describe the image, or leave the description empty to base it on your post text, and click Create Image.
Click the pencil on an attached image to edit it.
Networks have their own media rules. The screen warns you, for example "Max {n} images - extras will be skipped" or "Images not supported - will be skipped".
Important: Instagram needs at least one image or video. An Instagram post without media is not blocked on this screen, but it fails when it is published. Check Failed Posts if a post didn't go out.
Step 5: Publish now or schedule
To publish right away, leave Schedule for later off.
To plan the post, switch on Schedule for later:
Single Time: pick a Date and Time.
Multiple Times: click Add Time for each moment, or use Quick add: (Daily for 7 days, Weekdays (2 weeks), 4x tomorrow). Each time becomes a separate post.
Click Publish Now or Schedule Post.
In Ready to Publish? or Ready to Schedule?, check the summary and click the button again, or click Go Back.
Dates and times use your computer's local time.
After publishing you see Post Queued! (the post goes out shortly) or Post Scheduled!, with View Queue, Create Another and Done.
To keep working later, click Save as Draft. Your text is also saved in your browser as you type, so you see "Draft restored" when you come back. Clear Draft removes it.
After publishing
Use the navigation at the top of the social posting screen:
Calendar opens the Posts page with Scheduled, Drafts, Published and Archived posts.
Failed Posts lists posts that could not be published.
Accounts that need reconnecting
When an account's connection has expired, its preview shows "This account needs reconnecting" with a Reconnect button. Click it and sign in to the network again. Until you do, that account won't receive the post. See Connecting social media accounts.
Sharing a blog post on social media
When you publish a blog post, you can share it on the company's social accounts from the blog editor. See Writing and publishing in the blog editor.
Note: The Quick Post and Promote cards start a blog post, not a social post. Promote turns a page, blog post or link into a promotion text with an image, and Add to the editor for further editing opens it in the blog editor.
